BAA & the Contemporary Art Society are proud to announce the completion of the major feature artwork commissioned for the new Heathrow Airport Terminal 5. The internationally renowned Turner Prize nominated artists Langlands & Bell won the BAA commission in 2005. Moving World (Night & Day), a triumph of public art, is a focal large-scale outdoor installation that has been created to enhance everyone’s experience of the Terminal 5 complex.

Reflecting the excitement of international travel, Langlands and Bell describe their sculpture as “a poetry of places where landing points offer departures into the imaginary, and result in unimagined arrivals.”

Moving World (Night & Day) consists of two neon and glass walls installed at either end of the pedestrian plaza that fronts the terminal building designed by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour + Partners. On each wall, a luminous arc of intense blue neon spells out airport codes from across the globe. At the foot of each wall is a granite plinth that invites visitors to stop, rest and enjoy the play of light. The neon is programmed to give a constantly changing pattern of moving blue light that reflects in the glass walls of the new terminal building throughout the day and night.

The commission has been curated and managed by Contemporary Art Society’s Consultancy Services and was launched at the official opening on 14 March. The terminal was open to the public from 27 March 2008.

Paul Hobson, the new Director of the Contemporary Art Society, is delighted with the commission and says Moving World (Night and Day) is a monumental presence at the new terminal and a dynamic metaphor for the ever-intensifying network of global communication and exchange - the defining characteristic of our age.”

About Langlands & Bell
Based in London. Langlands & Bell have been collaborating since 1978 and exhibiting internationally since the early 80’s. Their sculptures range from architectural ground-plans presented as immaculate models or monochrome reliefs, to innovative new technology projects and the full scale architecture of the monumental steel and glass bridge which was recently completed at Paddington Basin in London.
Langlands & Bell were shortlisted for the 2004 Turner Prize and won the BAFTA Award for Interactive Art Installation the same year. They approach this high profile commission against a background of work that explores the complex web of relationships which connect people to architecture and the coded systems of circulation and exchange that surround us.
