Kyoko
Kagata Infinity Wear
In
the foyer of The Economist Tower, we will be showing a series of
works by Japanese graphic designer and artist, Kyoko Kagata.
Infinity
Wear is
a clothing collection made using simple bands of cheap fabric
directly from a spool. Kagata presents these paired down garments as
an alternative strategy to the extremity of Asian production and
consumption. They are both a personal catharsis for her work as a
packaging designer, and an attempt to engage critically with the
design and production values of mass industry.
There
will be a short performance during the reception by musicians
wearing the Infinity Wear collection, starting at 6.30pm.
Kagata
graduated from the Jhoshibi Junior College of Art and Design (Tokyo,
Japan) in 1993. She has exhibited widely in Japan and Asia. Details
of past and future projects can be found at www.kyokokagata.com
Cathie
Pilkington
Homunculus
For
the second half of the summer, in the plaza of The Economist Tower,
Cathie Pilkington will present a new work entitled Homunculus.
Like
other characters and animals in Pilkington’s work, this painted
fibreglass manikin employs a carefully rendered realism to an
animated and engaging effect. References to traditional and
commemorative sculpture are mixed with more playful associations of
popular ornaments and collectables. Placed in the centre of The
Economist Plaza this diminutive character is an unexpected presence.
Whilst the scale of the figure suggests isolation and vulnerability,
his nonchalant stance and snappy dress presents an unsettling image
of a child ready for the corporate world.
Pilkington
has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad. Recent and
forthcoming projects include: Emporium, Domobaal, London
(2003); Captive Bred, Bolton City Art Gallery (2003); Off
The Leash, Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield (2003); and Flock,
Model Niland Centre, Sligo, Ireland (2003).
